JOY!!!!

medyssa Mar 30, 2007 12:24 PM

Okay, so not only did I get a nice pair of sibling adults from Pete Marshall (says he knows you Dave from before you started breedingg BRBs) on Wednesday night, BUT I also found Noah!
The jerk was drinking from a bowl I had left out to clean. I had to do a double-take to make sure that everyone was still in their cages, and no one had gotten out (thank goodness) aside from Noah.
So, with two (probably) gravid females, and two more soon to be, two gorgeous males and my babies from last year beefing up, all is well in my snake room.
I'll post pictures of my new snakes tonight!

Way Cool, Yeah I've known Pete for more years than I can count. Surprised he parted with those, he just got them recently. Was supposed to bring over to visit but we got busy and na=ever happened. Congrats on Noah, Much easier for an adult to be on the lam for a while and come back with no adverse affects from his holiday. Babies just don't last long out on the loose. Unless of course you live in a humid warm climate.

Did Pete cool them? If not, you may not get any action this year.

Hey Dave, Yeah, Pete's pretty cool. He didnt say if he cooled them or not, he had two personal heatpads under the tank but it was a big tank, I think they were probably staying close to 75. Right now I still have them together, the male has some bad eye caps that look like they have been on for a long time, I got some of it off with a wet q-tip, which didnt take too much effort. There are still some layers to it but I dont want to get him too bothered, I am hoping to slowly work it off, the eye looks ok underneath. The female is having a bad shed, all bits and pieces.
Let me know if you want to see them Dave, I'd be happy to stop by. I'd also love to drool over your collection again. I am surprised though that I got to them before you. They look awesome and the male seems to have what you call the eclipse phase, isnt that where the circles on the side are all black? He has a bunch of those, Pete didnt say if he knew where the previous owner got them, but I wouldnt be surprised if they came from you. I scored, I know that, even if they dont breed this season.
I think I'll hold onto my little "happy bubble" through next week for finding Noah, then getting these two.

Congrats on the two, seriously, I don't need any more. Pete had not offered them to me although I suspected he might want to pawn them off on me. Like you said, I already have a stunning (or in Bob's words "Distinct" ) collection of BRB's.

Both of those problems are related to improper care, Low humidity. Both should clear up with a nice damp moss hide box!! My BRB's are thriving with them, better than they've ever looked without them.

You're welcome to come and enjoy the collection but let me know in advance so I can schedule the female guard for the exit strip search. I am soooooo possessive of my babies.

Seriously, I do need to protect my collection so no "visits" by other snakes. I have way to much at risk!! Even the Genesis project is under strict quarantine. I'd love to see pics of your new ones though!!

Could be some of my babies, there are a lot of them out there. The earlier ones were all sold local. Unfortunately, I know for a fact not all of them have survived I have heard back from a few customers that have lost my babies due to their own lack of attention to the details. Escaped, put in tank where other reptiles had mysteriously died, improper humidity and or temps. I do work with each and every one to give them all the info they need, but I can only show/tell them about proper care.....

I know what you mean Dave, I havent heard back from everyone I sold the four babies from last year to. Which actually makes me feel more fortunate for the two people who have kept in contact.
I already have them in nice moist moss containers, they havent seemed to move but a trail of shed I found this morning told that the female was active, which makes me feel good.
No worries Dave, I know how you feel about possibly getting icky stuff from other snakes, which is why I dont snake sit in my house or cages anymore (once I did, got mites, big surprise).

OK, now multiply your four by a hundred...no way to keep track of them. I've even heard/seen some of my babies up for resale as produced by Dave Colling. Kinda cool actually!

Have you wet bagged the female? Will help her shed. Fully wet pillowcase, put snake inside and tie shut. Put pillowcase in warm spot (so she doesn't get cold) and leave alone for a few hours. Even overnight if need be.

Thanks for understanding, no offense meant and definately NOT saying your snakes have anything, I just can't risk anything.

Mites, and even worse than the mites is what else the mites could be carrying and transfer to your snakes. Of all the snakes I've gotten in, two did come with mites. Neither were "infested", just a few. But without proper quarantine procedures, they could have gotten into the collection and can you imagine the mess that could cause? Trying to erradicate mites from dozens of snakes.......I shiver just thinking about it!! It was actually very easy to erradicate both times. I was looking for them with so many coming in and they were found relatively quickly. That and I pretreat my quarantine cages with provent-a-mite as part of my preperation for a new arrival.

HAHA, to be honest Dave, I would never be insulted if you didn't want my snakes or even me (if I where recently handling my snakes) in your snake room. I have been "given" mites by some very surprising sources, TRUST NO ONE, no matter how famous you think they are. Always treat as a prophylaxis and I mean always!

Congrats on finding Noah! That's pretty luck to find a loose snake. I have yet to lose one, but if I do I doubt I'd ever see it again. My building is very old, and there are many nooks an crannys that it could find. Glad you got him back!

Dave is right about Noah being hardy as an adult and a younger one would surely not make it out that long. I am very happy for you finding him and hopefully it won't happen again so you won't have any more paranoid parents best of luck this breeding season too.

Jess,
..Congratulations on the new ones and the return of the lost one. We all have snakes escape occasionally. It helps if you have a dedicated snake room and can keep it closed.
