Giving BD medication, need help......

chargeup Aug 13, 2003 02:19 AM

Hi all, my bd recently got an infection/virus and i have been givine this medication to give to him through the mouth using a syringe, now this is all good and well aprt from the fact that i have to open his mouth bye gentley squeezing the sides to get the syringe in there, now today when i was doing this my thumb sliped and just slightley went in his mouth, he took this opertunity to chew off the top part of my thumb, i have just had this sewn back on as he spat the small bit of my thumb back out, but i was wondering, is there any other way of giving a BD his food, now it wasent his fault i know that this happend, as i know that if you stick your finger in any reptiles mouth there likely to bite down, and he never actually tryed to bite you normally, but my finger now hurts more then when i broke it, and so if there is anything you know then ill apreciate it. thanks, chris

Hi I have found when feeding BDs through a syringe that its best to go at them from the side of the mouth, when they open thier mouths to try and get it out, squirt the fluid in fast.

Hope this helps.

IF you do the method described above of going in the side, you can also gently pull down under their mouths on the loose skin and sometimes that will help them to open up a bit. Any pics of the finger ?? lol

WOW! I am amazed you got bitten and as bad as you say you did. I just got finished medicating all of my adults (5 minutes ago) and not so much as a nip from any of them. I generally hold them at my chest and place the syringe along the side edge of their mouths. I apply a little pressure while moving the syringe back and forth slightly and genrally they open up just enough to slip the syringe in. Seems to work best when I am holding them... If I tried this method with them down in their tanks it would not work, they would fight me all day long. The babies, I just drop it on their noses and after they lick it off, I drop some more until I think they have had enough.

the BD in question isnt as even tempremented as most thoe, i have been trying to tame him for over a year now, and he just doesnt seem to like being handeld, i have to put him on a smooth surface to give him the medication as he tryes to run when i apply it. he does let me hold him thoe and wont usually nip me, but this is new to him and he doesnt much appreciate having things being stuck in his mouth without his own consent, lol. you can always tell what he thinks of you thoe when you look at his eyes, he is one of the most skilled BD's i have ever seen at giving evils, lol. thanks agian for the help and i will be sure to try these out.
