Bulging Eggs

rugha Mar 30, 2007 08:31 PM

Ok,

I have a clutch of 9 eggs incubating since Feb 14. They are big and bright white, but today I looked closer and the bottom of the eggs are discolored a bit and bulging outward. I picked one up and examined it and they are really tight. They are in a tupperware container w/ the lid on.

Upon inspecting one of the eggs, it ruptured and oozed out, so I went ahead and cut it open it inside was a nice pretty ball python.

Should I take off the lid? What do you guys make of the bulging bottom of the eggs?

This is my first attempt at breeding balls, btw.

Thanks!

WJ

Since 2/14 is only 44 days, definitely don't go cutting them open. Was the one you did cut, well-developed, move around at all? 44 days just seems really early. What temp are they incubating at?

rugha Mar 31, 2007 07:34 AM

The snake was not moving around, but it was developed.

RyanT Mar 31, 2007 10:19 AM

Does that mean it didn't make it?

rugha Mar 31, 2007 03:14 PM

It was not alive, but it was developed.

What does that mean?

sounds like you put to much water in your medium. I had a simular problem but they did not last as long as your eggs did so maybe they are savable if this is your problem

Why dont you get them off the substrate with some egg crate underneath and let the bottoms breath a little?

morphdepot Mar 31, 2007 11:56 AM

Sounds like your substrate is too wet

rugha Mar 31, 2007 03:14 PM

Substrate is fairly dry now.

The "bulging" thing doesn't bother me too much, as I have hatched out some real "distorted" looking eggs! But let me ask you this: Do you have air holes in your incubation container? By the way you described it, it sounds as if it maybe suffocated! You need air flow! Even if you got the substrate too wet at the beginning, the proper air flow with correct that! I have mine set up, so I have to "mist" them every other day or so!

No air holes - ALL the advice I got said don't use airholes. The container is not airtight anyway. I have seen many pics of breeders using glass to cover their containers w/out holes.
