handling

eppyemmy Mar 31, 2007 03:26 AM

my baby gecko just turned two months old and i read up that getting them accustomed to handling is best when they are young. he has been out only three times since i've got him, twice he crawled into my hand by himself, and i just let him crawl on me and didnt touch him much. the first time i picked him up behind his front legs, he squeaked a bit, but he was fine afterwards. he's a little skittish, and he's resisted crawling into my hand lately. last week was when i had him out. i know i dont want to overhandle him, but it'd be cool if he'd cooperate. any advice? am i doing anything wrong, etc? thanks!!

Slow and steady is the key... you have to be patient. The gecko won't become hand-tame overnight.

Get the gecko accustomed to your hands by cleaning, and letting it walk over your fingers inside the cage. Once the gecko seems comfortable with that, then pick it up, but keep your arms inside the tank so that it won't fall to the floor if it decides to 'jump ship'

Baby geckos are flighty and spook easily, so keep your movements slow and deliberate.

I second begunwithaletter.

I've had my first boy since September, and while he crawls up on my hand every time I put it in the cage, once we're out of the cage it's turbo time. He just loves making me exercise to keep him off the floor.

Geckos are way fast when they want to be. :P

Yup i agree as well with begun. I have 7 leos and 4 of them you can just put your hand in and they will crawl right up on it. The other 3 you can just pick up with no problems, just won't crawl on your hand.
