Canned food (good or bad?)

black_wolf Mar 31, 2007 09:17 AM

I've been wondering what are people's opinions on canned food. Why do some like it and why do some don't?
I can understand some not liking the idea of dead bugs in the fridge(even though it's in a can), but why? What's wrong with using canned as a staple?

I don't wanna hear the crap on "they don't do it in the wild..." "it's not part of their natural diet..." Cause you know what, it's not natural for them to live in your home now is it?

I like canned cause I put no effort in keeping my beardies food alive which gives me more time with them, no mess, no noise, no smell, saves space in my rooms. And I can get a large verity at my fingertips. I stopped using crickets cause they stink, escape, eat each other, and just plan don't live long enough.
I still dust my feeders before feeding with calcium(no d3) and vitamins(no A)

I feed mine both live and canned, one of my dragons is a fussy eater and got hooked on grass hoppers, i wont feed him wild so canned is the way togo for him even though it has to be the most expensive way todo

I tried canned, but my beardie wouldn't have anything to do with it, unfortunately. That's my only 'problem' with it !

A lot of pet store have then if they have anything for reptiles(like my fav is PetSmart and PetSupermarket). If you do get canned food from a pet store ALWAYS check the bottom of the can for the expiration date.
But yeah, that's why I like canned food.

I don't use it just because it would be too expensive. I have 10 lizards and i just order crix every 2 weeks and i get mealies out of a bait machine for real cheap. So it costs me about 30.00 every 2 weeks to feed verses if i would buy canned they are like 2.00 a can for a little can and i would need like 2 cans per animal per day. LOL So that wouldn't work at all. Otherwise i probably would use it due to they aren't alive!! LOL

Ok, well I'm new to beardies, have read a lot, but new none the less. My other herps won't eat dead food, it has to be moving, so this is something I have never tried. Beardies will eat canned food??? I'm thinking I need to try this, at least to have a back up, incase I run out of crickets or something. And since I'm asking, I bought some mealworms, for the cham, not the beardie. Beardie (no name yet, sorry) is only about 3 inches long, the sweet little cutie, and at this size, I am not finding anything locally available other than the baby crickets. At what age or size maybe, do you recommend offering other insects as well?
Thanks for any replies, and I am really enjoying reading the various posts and learning from other peoples questions!

Some people say that they won't feed mealies at all. I fed them at about 8 months of age about 200grams, before i fed mealies or any other insects.
