Columbian Boa 90% time in the water

tomsdesign Mar 31, 2007 11:14 AM

Hes about 3ft and 90% of his time I see him in the water... he even sleeps in it... I keep the water and that side of the tank at 31C (88 F). Is this normal or should I be worried? I just got him 2 months ago and he just started doing this 2 weeks ago.

look in the water bowl. If you see what looks like pepper in the bowl, you have mites. If you don't see that, maybe your temps are too high?

no i dont see a pepper like substance... all i find in the water is poop and some white substance that resembels white caulking ?? not sure what that could be or if its normal.

his hideaway is on the oposite side (left) of the tank and that area i keep cooler so im not sure why he does that ?

here is a pic of my setup. I have added a drain to my water container so water changes take few seconds , I still need to make it look like a real pond so I will be experimenting with that next week.

Hey nice looking vivarium. : ) Definitely put another hide box on the warm side too. He could be trying to 'hide' in the water, and that might be the only 'hiding' place he feels safe in on the warm end. The white stuff is normal, it's called urates, it's how boas urinate.

Good luck

I'd move the water bowl to the cool side of the terrarium, and add a hide on the warm side. Like others have said, boas will attempt to hide in the water bowl if they feel unsecure elsewhere in the terrarium.

ok I will, will it hurt him spending so much time in the water just in case he doesnt change his behavior ?
