When breeding a large number of rats and other rodents, both cost and availability is the main concern.
I have found that feeding a basis of Sow nuts(Pig pellets)and Alfalfa pellets in a 3:1 mix is one of the best - and cheapest methods.

Do the rats actually EAT the alfalfa pellets? Rats can't digest alfalfa so it's a waste to give it to them.

what can't rats digest alfalfa? It's just another type of vegetable matter like carrots or lettuce...
I give mine alfalfa hay and they just use it for bedding(african soft furred, not "domestic"

Very different cell structure and digestive tracts. Rumens can digest it. Tough to breakdown.
Try eating hay....or just grass for that matter....it comes out like it went in....and we eat vegetables. Digestibility.

And I too have never had rats eat it. I use pellets for bedding for them sometimes.

Mazuri 6F (which, incidentally is made for breeding rats) is a wonderful choice. at less than $15/bag for 50 lbs. of the stuff you can't go wrong. Did I mention that it's formulated for breeding rats?..
