Use the whole body?

Jonasgn Aug 13, 2003 05:13 AM

Is it true that both greens and yellows, use their whole body to constrict their prey?
Cause most boas and pythons just use the front part of their body.

` Depends on the situation. I've seen them just loop around a rat, then use the loop to hold on and shove the rat down their throat. Most of mine don't constrict, at all.
You don't need hands to be dexterous.

Jonas,
Good observation. I don't know where you got your information but it is basically correct. I only feed fresh killed or F/T, and all of my greens are docile, but a few of them aggressively strike and constrict when feeding. I have not kept yellows, but of the greens I have that exhibit a strong feeding and constriction response, I have noticed that they do usually wrap a larger number of coils around the prey animal than other boas and pythons. My take on this is that anacondas are more likely to be feeding on non-mammalian prey, frequently in water, than other large constrictors. Fish and crocodillians are notoriously difficult to subdue, especially in a water environment, and I feel that anacondas have adapted by restraining their prey to a larger degree than is seen in other boids. Just my thoughts on it.

I think u are right about that they have to use more coils, so they can hold on to their wet and slippery prey.
I just got my info from pictures and tv.
