One from the yard today

Rick Millspaugh Apr 01, 2007 12:18 AM

About a four foot male. He was thirsty so I gave him some water (which he drank), that's why he has water on him. He had just eaten too, one less vermin rodent!

That had to be cool to have him drink water and be so calm right there out in the wild. they are smarter than what people give them credit for. Thanks for sharing the pic.

Gopher snakes or bull snakes locally. Those have ALOT more brown than the ones we have here in NM. Ours tend to have much more yellow. Everyone calls them bull snakes here.

It is a San Diego Gopher Snake, Bull Snakes are just one of the Sub-species (I know all the latin names but I'm having an old age moment and can't remember right now).

He was "browner" than normal around here, most are more olive with some red highlights. I just happened to have the camera handy, he stayed in that spot about 30 minutes before moving into some broken shade. They are common but I still like seeing them in the yard. I know a lot of the people here have pits too so I thought they would be interested. So far I get mostly the Gopher snakes in the yard but I have had a Rosy Boa, a Lyre snake, a couple terestrial Garter Snakes, lots of CA Stripped racers (only two since the big fires in 2004), a few Cal Kings, a ringneck and the neighbors have had a couple rattlesnakes. On the lizard side, the yard is full of Western Fence Lizards and Side-blotched lizards, there are a few Granite Spinny lizards and Aligator Lizards (semi-tame), plus some Orange Throat Whiptails when it's hot. I like seeing them all.
