can i feed it ONLY freeze-dried food?

rline928 Apr 01, 2007 09:00 AM

hey guys. I'm new to this forum, and I'm thinking about getting something that I can just feed freeze-dried crickets or mealworms, or any other sort of non-living food. I don't have enough time to pick up live crickets every few days. I understand that freeze-dried food lacks nutrition, but are there any lizards, geckos, or any other animals that won't be fussy when it comes to that? It's easier for me to just load up on can o' crickets and not worry about running to the pet store all the time. Thanks

You can always buy your crickets by the box and keep them in a big rubbermaid bin . I buy them a 1000 at a time and they keep well for me. Just feed them and give them water cubes and they will last a long time. You should be able to buy them by the 100 from your pet store.

so if you understand that it lacks nutrition, then would it not be logical to say... lack of nutrition = soon to be dead animal ?

Having an animal and feeding a diet that is lacking in what it needs just because you don't want to be bothered by some extra work is pretty selfish.

You're right. Stupid question!

Hmm.. while some lizards and geckos surely have less strict dietary requirements than others, I do not know of any pet that is totally not 'fussy' about nutritional deficiencies.

I'd say fish or a snake (frozen/thawed rodents.) All prey items need to be supplemented, whether by gut-loading live prey or injecting/coating dead prey. There is no preserved food that's considered nutritionally complete for any animal, because all animals eat a variety of substances.

Fish flakes are pretty complete for aquarium life, but even they need to be given the occasional live prey or freeze-dried invertebrate. I'd advise just setting aside a container, some food, and some "cricket gel" for feeder insects, then just buying a lot at a time.

Or, you could just get a herbivore.
