Iguana joe anyone ig behavior Q's

TESSI_GAL Apr 01, 2007 10:57 AM

A question for Iguanajoe or anyone else who would like to comment. A couple of things have happened that precluded me from building my Iguana enclosure according to the schedule that I had hoped to keep. Read here something about the "Best laid plans of mice and men...etc." Anyway this may have been fortuitious in the end. My morey eel outgrew his tank before I could get going on building the enclosure. We had to get him a much larger tank because testing showed that he is fouling his water too quickly and I can no longer keep up with the water changes. We found a wonderful show fish tank for the eel 2 X 4 X31.5 inches tall (150 gal.). Because of all of this I looked at my space available in a different way, since I planned to put the tank where the iguana was going to go, and then decided not to after all because of the weight of the tank (well over 1500 lbs. on a 2' by 4' footprint! (Can you say CRASH!!! lots of water!)

Anyway in this whole process I came up with some ideas and here they are:

1. I can put the Iguana enclosure over one of heating duct vents, build up the floor so the enclosure is not blocking the vent, and install a vent panel on the front wall of the bottom of the enclosure. This will create a space for the heat to collect and eventually vent and should create a nice ambient warmth on the bottom surface of her enclosure.

2. I can make it large without any of the previously mentioned restrictions because of sliding windows.

3. The sunshine hits that wall in the morning, but it is an interior wall located at almost the center of the house, so I do not expect a lot of actual temperature flucuation for her enclosure. (Likely there will be little UV benefit anyway, but she might just enjoy the natural light).

4. MOST IMPORTANTLY I could build this very high and create a conservatory arboretum look in my livingroom, which I think would be a very, very, cool look. I guess my two major questions deal with how tall is too tall for an iguana.
Question 1 is: In nature how high do Green Iguanas generally climb?
Question 2 is: I am worried about her taking a fall from a high shelf which is a reasonable concern...Can I make a shelf that spans the full enclosure and has for instance a small square opening with a ramp which can be her access to the shelf. Therefore I can minimize the potential of a fall to a large degree. Can an iguana deal with that kind of shelf setup (small square hole and ramp).

Thanks in advance.

IGUANA JOE Apr 03, 2007 11:59 PM

Iguanas are great climbers, and can climb as high as 2-stor. and more. In the rainforest, the ground has a good thick bedding of dead leaves and plants, acting as cushion for falls. It is not uncommon for iguanas to fall off a branch while sleeping.
In captivity, 8 to 10 feet is a good safe height.

As long as the shelf is sturdy, well secured, and rough-surfaced for good grip, as well as wide enough to facilitate moving about, it'll be fine. If possible to a more elaborate system of shelves to stimulate climbing and roaming.

Be very careful with sun exposure. Even an hour or less can literally cook your animal. Test it first with a thermometer at different intervals to see how the temperature fluctuates. It if goes above 100F, find a way to block the sun.

I can't see the pics, try again!

"It is not uncommon for iguanas to fall off a branch while sleeping." - That is something I would like to see (so long as they don't get hurt).
