When a dirty cage is OK ...

GainesReptiles Apr 01, 2007 08:43 PM

You know, I am a fanatic about a clean cage with fresh water, but there are times that I do make concessions ... like when a gravid female is so large that I am afraid to move her.

These photos are of 1 of my gravid Het T-positive Albino Argentines (bred by 1 of my visual T-positive Albino males). I have no timetable markers on this female, so I must check her daily.

Please ignore the dirty cage ... Bill

She's huge, I think we can all look past the dirty cage. She should give you a nice pile o' babies!!

I have to admit, I have one of those dirty cages myself! Not gravid but my albino male's been riding my DH sunglow for months. Don't want to disturb them. I've cleaned several times during that period when they weren't locked together, but it's been messy for a couple of weeks now. Every time I check, he's still on top!

That reason is why I use Aspen during the breeding season on all my girls. I can spot clean it fairly proficiently until they have their babies and it's fairly absorbent to help soak up all that goo once they have them. I have also been giving my girls a 28qt tub full of moist cypress mulch once their due date is getting close. Since I have been doing this almost 95% of my girls have their babies right in the tub! Very much like what Rich Ihle does with his girls.
