Should I be worried

Dru117 Apr 02, 2007 12:24 AM

I need some general info on the beardeds. I have had 2 for not more than 2 weeks. Im not real sure how old they are, but they cant be more than 3 or 4 months we feed regularly with crickets and veggies. I keep the basking light at about 100 which is what i have read in care sheets but i have read alot about HIND LEG EXTENSION. my female lays around alot with her back legs strecthed out but moves fine when she is up and about. and her eating haddits are great. She will also sit with her mouth partialy open for short periods of time after a meal. Are these signs of hind leg extension or paralysis. Should I be worried?

Hind leg extension is a symptom of impaction. When that happens they cannot move their legs and it is generally terminal. Impaction is usually caused by eating the wrong or too big a prey item. Just feed them crickets that have bodies no longer than the distance between their eyes and no mealworms and you'll be fine. Beardies lay around and sleep in all sorts of odd positions so I wouldn't be worried.

Beardies need to be very warm to digest their food properly. Therefore, your temp. on the basking spot should be between 105-110 for an adult or sub-adult and 110-115 for a baby or juvenile. The cool end of the tank should be 75-85. Care sheets that suggest lower temps. then this are outdated.

Here's a great site for food and vegs.

I agree basking temps should be up a bit. 110-115 at most. I would also like to say mealies are fine as a treat about 1 a week or so. Pheonix, butter, waxworms may all be fed only as treats as well about 1every other week or so.
