Just wondering if it is a good idea to breed rats in the same room with my snakes?
Any help is appreciated.

I did that and it was not a good idea. My snakes went from being able to handle anytime to as soon as I would pick them up and the tongue started I would get nailed, I removed the rodents to another room away from them and have had no problem. They have a keen sense of smell and rodents stink (especially males) and I think it triggered a feeding response.
I have bred rats in the same garage as I keep my snakes in for 4 years. The only draw back is the Snakes always have the rat scent. Two issues. When you stick your hand in the snakes cage it could be thinking dinner. The other issue may or may not effect the snakes. The constant scent could overload their senses so that it impedes their natural instinct. In the first issue, I don't care because I don't handle my boas as they are breeders. In the second issue there has been no effect on my boas. But the jury is still out on my ball pythons.

I've been breeding rats in the same room as I keep my balls in for the last 6 years, and have never had an issue. No change in their feeding response, no temperment change, nada. Works for me.

I noticed that you put up a sheet of pegboard on the back of your rack.
How important is having a closed back on a rack system?
(was just going to leave mine open)
If you are referring to the pegboard on the back of my snake racks, I don't really find it neccesary as I use belly heat, I jsut find that it holds heat in a little better with the pegboard than without it.

I only started breeding my own rats a few months back in the same room as my snakes but I have always housed the rats I use to purchase for food in the same room with them and have never seen nor had a problem. I don't handle my snakes often as it is but when I do I don't see a difference with them. I only have 2 snakes that have a aggressive temperament and the rats don't change this either way.
