New Set Up

Shellabelle1980 Apr 02, 2007 06:47 PM

. . . So far I've plastered over the base, and have made a cave hide, a humid hide, and a log, all out of various household items that have been plastered over. I've done some priming, and every thing will be painted in sand, earth, rock colors . . . any opinions? tips?

Yeah, pretty cool looking, make sure to post pictures when everything is painted and set-up, then I bet it will look even nicer.

Well, nice looking creations, but I wonder what the situation is with regard to paint and plaster being ingested by geckos. They do investigate new stuff by licking it - are you absolutely certain that this will be safe for them? (Not accusing, I just don't know, and with plaster being at least semi-breakable, the possibility of some being eaten doesn't seem all that terribly far-fetched to me.)

Everything is non-toxic, the plaster is silica free and the paints are acrylic non-toxic from the craft store . . . I have a water-based polyeurethene to seal everything, and then I'll wait a week or so for all the fumes to air out before putting it in Gibby's cage . . . I had a lot of the same worries when I first researched how to do it, so I wanted to make sure I did it right! (Hopefully I am doing it right . . .)

What are you going to use to seal it? I assume that it's plaster of paris, right? That stuff will crumbled to bits if it gets wet and you don't seal it. I think it's a good idea as long as you've thought it out. I've been considering some similar options.

See above reply . . . if you're thinking about doing something like this, go to the Repticzone.com housing and enclosures leo forum . . . GeckoHappy has a really sweet set up made of plaster and painted and sealed that looks awesome, and she has the step by step process outlined too! I don't know how to do a link for you, but if you go search around you'll find it!

oops, forgot to mention everything is being primed before being painted and sealed . . . I'm so excited about this project!
