So I Tried To Breed RATS!!!

insomthegreat Apr 03, 2007 02:32 AM

It lasted about three days and then I couldnt take the smell, the screams (play?) or the look of there nasty little faces. I love animals but I will enjoy retiring my three day breeders. I will be buying a mini freezer so I dont break the no rodents in freezer rule (Great Rule). Does anybody who buys frozen know how many "bags" of small to medium rats can fit in a regular or mini freezer?
Thank you,
I will sleep better tonight knowing they are in a better place.

They do have a special smell, Personally I think they are very cute, My kids have three as pets and they are wonderfull, never bite better than a hamster, the pets are all females so they are not as stinky.. Not sure on how many will fit in a mini freezer.

how many snakes do you have? i wouldnt buy frozen until you know for sure thats what they will eat. i have 8 female rats and 4 males and about 35-40 weanlings right now and it doesnt smell until about that fifth - sixth day then i change bedding. i use carefresh and aspen and it does a good job at holding odor. also i keep them in the back room where theres a door that i keep open a few hours a day and also i have a candle lit most of the day in the other room to have a nice smell going and no one knows that i have rats back there. and no one says it smells in my place. honsestly i just recently bought a room air purifier and its doing a awesome job keeping the air clean. its called the air oasis extreme. i went the extra mile and spent good money on it but i can not have a smell in here. i tried switching but so far no luck. i prekilled and than tried and no luck except one but not the rest of them. well good luck.

I know what your mean!

We have 3.9 rats now and those are just for our Ball pythons. All our boas of all ages feed exclusively on F/T rats, but all our ball pythons will only feed on live rodents. Keeping and breeding rats is no trouble at all, we keep them outside when the weather is nice and temps aren't too low or too high. We religiously clean the tubs every 7 days and on occasions when we may bring them inside, we clean the tubs every 5 days. We also place a couple drops of vanilla in their water bottles, it helps! You really don't smell anything until the 6th, by the 7th day you'll know they need cleaning! With rats it's really about your maintenance and keeping a religious cleaning schedule!

I will say one thing, I'd rather have 3.9 rats Vs 1.3 mice any day of the week! As for how many frozens fit in a fridge, depends on the fridge.

three days and they smelled? I have 4 adult rats and they only start to smell a good week after I change their cages. What are you using as a substrate? What are you feeding them and most of all, how small is the cage they are in? A really small cage will need to be changed much more regularly than more roomier cages. I keep my rats in large roughneck rubbermaid containers (these are roughly 42"x21"x16" They only start to smell fast when I have several weaned litters in with the adults. This is pretty much when the babies do their business without the mother cleaning up after them.

As for how many rats can fit in a freezer, it depends on how well packaged they are. If packaged flat, you could stack a fair bit in a small freezer, but I don't see getting more than 25 in a mini fridge freezer...(I don't think there is room for more than say, 4 packs of bacon in those tiny freezers). If you need more than that, I suggest getting a small cube freezer. Probably cost around the same amount as a bar fridge/mini fridge and you will have much more space.

Im doing the math and I will have to try breeding one more time until im shure I can swich to frozen.
I have 6 female balls between 600 and 1000 grams. I will be getting 4 more females in the 1000 gram range along with two males. I decided to just buy a small rat rack set up instead of a 20 gallon tank. My problem is I dont know how many feeders I will need too produce for 12 snakes. So far my snakes have eating 2 to 3 rats each ($2.25 small rat x 9=20.25) in the 1 week that I have had them.I know they will not eat that much for very long but I want too give it too them for as long as they will take it.
