GATOR HEALTH ISSUE

hb24 Apr 03, 2007 03:13 AM

No affiance too any one but I would like too only hear from people that have experience with this. My 5' alligator that I got a month ago has two infections fungal and bacterial on cuts that he got from a Nile he was housed with, the vet gave me antibiotics that have too be given every day (pill) I'm the kind of keeper that doesn't like stressing my alligators out from handling in fact I have been told that I get more stress then the animal probable does and two weeks of this is going too be stressful for both of us,the fact that he's sick and will not eat means I have too fiscally open his moth and be certain that the pill is down, the vet also told me too keep him out of water for a while it all makes cents but my question is has any one ever dealt with any thing like this and what was the outcome, I'm just hopeing the stress isn't too much for him. This is the first time dealing with health issues with any of my gators and yes its stressing me out. thanks

i havent done much with gators, but i do know the medical side as a vet tech, if the effective dose needs to be every day, then do it! i know the stress of dealing with sick animals, but sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and do whats best. could your vet find a EOD dose? if the stress is getting into the mouth then maybe an injection would be in order? keeping him out of the water seems more stressful from what i know of gators, is it to try to keep the wound clean? could he be allowed some soaking time then the areas cleaned?

hope all comes out well, good luck!

Unfortunately you're not going to find too many crocodilian keepers here. I'm sure you'll get better at pilling, so the ordeal will be over in less time, and will thus be less stressfull. Injections are another possibility and can often be done quicker, although I'm uncertain if there are many fungal medications that can be given via injection. Perhaps this isn't an option in the vet's mind. Another difficult animal to give med's by mouth is a tortoise. They really do well with an esophophagostomy tube. Then there's no stress from medicating, just squirt down a tube!

Good luck!
Ian
