Size Question

Sighthunter Apr 03, 2007 08:28 AM

There are reports of colubrids that are fourteen feet. I think Ptyas must have the record and from what I can tell by the literature they are right in line with Cribos and the like being opportunistic feeders and racer like. Breaking ten feet narrows down the playing field I can only think of a handful of snakes capable of doing this and they are Indigo/Cribo, Spilotes, Pseustes and Ptyas. My question is this, how many colubrids can reach Ten feet? There must be more than four. I am sure there are a few Asian Ratsnakes capable of ten feet. It seems to me that if Gonyosoma is capable of eight feet there must be a ten footer out there somewhere?

I know of one importer who claims to have had a 10' Gonyosoma oxycephala from I believe Malaysia. I now have two Malaysian specimens and they are very large, although I'm sure under 8'.

I also spoke to another importer who took a picture of himself holding an Elaphe moellendorffi over in Asia that was over 10'. I never saw the picture but have heard from others that it is impressive.

Zoacys dhumnades and some Boiga spp., perhaps Boiga cynodon, into the mix as well...

Definitely Boiga cynodon, and I've also read articles about Boiga irregularis and Boiga dendrophila with some adults exceeding 9 feet. There may be some others of the Boiga genus which grow that large as there are a lot of them.

Yes, Boiga. Who has bred them into F1 or F2? I have wanted to work with them but I want captive bred. Any info is appretiated. Seems the breeders do ok for a while and something happens. But Boiga is on the radar.

There are few, if any, breeders in the U.S. but I know of several in Europe, and a few in Asia. There are also huge waiting lists for the few breeders out there, and CB are usually accounted for well before they even hatch. Right now I'm looking for another Boiga dendrophila dendrophila to breed with mine so, with any luck, I'll have hatchlings in the future. I've also written a husbrandy sheet on this species. Boigas are my favorite Asian snakes, but they have insane temperaments, so expect an aggressive snake with a potentially potent venom.

having worked with a large variety and number of Boiga, I have I have yet to see any pass the 3m mark, thoough I believe it is certainly possible.
Also, there is some talk of changing the taxonomy of Zaocys dhumnades, as some believe it should be amended to the genus Ptyas...

Best regards,

Jeff

A lot of reports of 10' Blue Beauty snakes back when imports were coming in.

Biggest colubrid I ever saw was the Spilotes at the Brookfield Zoo. I saw it in the mid-90's, don't know if it's still there.
