Yellow, Everglades, Whiteside????

myklx Apr 03, 2007 12:59 PM

I purchased this snake a few weeks ago as a Yellow/Everglades Ratsnake. She does have partial white sides an overall "faded" color/pattern (compared to my other Yellows), and her eyes are light grey w/ dark red pupils. So I’m thinking shes actually a Whiteside (Ghost) Glades, a hypo or something. Could be just a normal Yellow Ratsnake.
I would like to hear some opinions on her.
Thanks....

I'm sure there's some strange stuff going on in it's genetic lineage, such as "hypoxanthism"(reduced yellow),"hypomelanism" (reduced dark pigment), and the sides being different!
but I'm not sure exactly what combination of breeding brought that combination about.......VERY cool though, for sure!!

I am sure that is something special. Make some.

Thanks for the replies.
The eyes are what is throwing me off. All my other Yellows and Glades, and all that I have seen, have orange eyes.
Shes doesn't have pure, clean white sides but their is deffinetly a lot of white there. There are also just a few scales that are bright orange....maybe like 5 of them. Strange.
Eather way, shes an awesome looking snake with the best temperment I ever seen on a ratsnake.

It may be what some people call ghost too. I have seen some of both names labeling snakes with that look. I never really liked them so I never found out what the mix was.

Ghost is the same thing as whitesided. Some people hesitate to call them whitesided because they don't really have white sides. They're supposed to be pure everglades, but because they have yellow in the homozygous ghost/whitesided morph, a lot of people think they have yellow blood in them. Which is entirely possible, since a ton of the glades out there do have yellow mixed in. On the other hand, I've seen people who bought those as yellows, and have bred them with normal yellows to make hets. So, there're some mutts out there.

This guy came from Dwight Good, and is pure Everglades.

Sidenote- I don't know anyone who has really experimented with this, but the gene is the same as the whitesided gene in black rats, so, that says to me that there's some mixing between them somewhere along the line. All I know is I've seen pics of the offspring from a ws black rat x ws everglades, and the babies are ws.

Thanks for the info! Your does look a lot like mine. I can't tell to much, but yours seem to have the same eye color as mine (light grey). Is this a characteristic of ghosts? Your looks kinda big, mine is about 2.5'. I wonder if she will change much as she grows.
I have been interested in buying a white side Glades for a while, but could not afford 'em. But I got this girl for $60-, a good deal I guess.

Another note: She has a very light pink tongue as well. Yours seem to be too.

that snake there appears to be what was once called a ghost glades or a whitesided glades. they are hypo, but the hypo may just be the result of what the w/s gene is doing....

sort of like what the w/s gene does with black rats... i've yet to see a jet black w/s black rat.

thet're awesome animals. i really miss my w/s glades.

found on the Love's property i think - i'm sure i'll be quickly corrected if i'm wrong...... some time ago i dug up the history on these and if memeory serves me they are pure glades.

not many people worked on cleaning up the sides or refining the line so they stayed dirty.

anyone have a photo of the first few w/s blk rats?? they were pretty messy looking.

thats what i think....
