any luck breeding non brumated brooks...

wisema2297 Apr 03, 2007 03:14 PM

I have a pair of adult brooks (one belongs to Steve Craig) that I am attempting to breed. We both just bought them at the Richmond Show last weekend. I forgot to ask if my female was brumated. Havw any of you had luck breeding them without brumating?

Personally I would not take anyone elses experience with this too seriously as you just won't know unless you try. You will end up hearing opinions that you absolutely have to do this or that.... I would keep the male cool though, not much of a hot spot... Your chances of producing a fertile clutch will be 50/50 any which you analyze it. Tom Stevens

.....I've had successful breedings of many pairs of kings, corns, rats, and more without any "brumation".

Where yo able to determine when the female was ready or did you just introduce them this time of year when ever she sheds?

I was able to determine a few but I rarely bother with that. I just put them together with the female's freshly shed skin and most times they'll breed. My AZ mtn. kings bred for me after a very hot winter one year and she laid 6 fertile eggs. I was told there's "no way".
No way if you don't try!

That IS amazing on those pyros you bred. But I don't think it would work with some zonata especially the ones from calif higher elevations like Saint Helena mtn king, Seirra mtn king or even San Bernardino mtn kings. Maybe with mutifisciata (coastal) or pulchra (San Diego) though. Probably somebody has done it with agalma (Baja) since they are pretty common in the hobby next to the pyros.

But then again. Who knows. Prove me wrong

...I got that pair as hatchlings from a friend who was in St. Petersburg at the time. He also bred his (parents to mine) without any special cooling at all.
I think for some snakes, being raised for years and getting acclimated to their "new" surroundings and weather patterns helps them to get their own rhythmn and cycle accordingly for reproduction.
Ever have a pair that would not breed for several years..then all of a sudden they do??
