Upgraded to UV/heat bulb...

in2deep Apr 03, 2007 04:41 PM

I finally made the jump from compact fluorescent to a UV/heat bulb. I got the T-rex version 'cause I could find it locally...
Anyway, I've noticed a funny ozone-like odor coming off it, but it's not the burning-electrical smell of a bad light fixture.
Is this typical for a new UV/heat bulbs? Something I need to panic about?
Thanks.

That IS typical for a new bulb. What is it? I think it is the extra sealant connecting the glass to the metal burning up or it could be that these bulbs are extra strong for the first few days(they are) and that is burn off you smell. I THINK it is really the sealant but it definately could be the "burn off". It goes away soon and the bulb is still VERY strong so I think it's the sealant and the "factory smell". Call the guy from Reptileuv.com and ask him he definately knows for sure. I've been using them a few years and they always smell and I'm still alive, and so are the uros, but don't go snorting the fumes.P>S> the first few days keep the bulb a little further away from the reptile, I don't know why T-Rex doesn't say that on the box. although it's not deadly or anything I think it's a good idea, but don't panic because the likelyhood of that bulb being as strong as midday desert sun at recommended distance is slim and none. Hey Slim, come back!

The bulbs will put out that much uv but USUALLY at less than the RECOMMENDED distance. With a meter you can safely have it closer.
