How is everyone doing? Does anyone know when permethrins/pyrethrins were first used on snakes and in which form and frequency?
....just curious,

I have heard of it as long as 15 years ago, so probably was around before I heard of it, not sure on the form and frequency, I used Vapona Pest Strips back then with 2.2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate, I never lost any snakes, I suspended it in perforated film canisters with ventilation for 24 hours then repeated every 7 days for 4 weeks and used a entire pest strip to treat environment, this was over 20 years ago, I also used Palmolive Soapy water treatment and repeatedly treated enclosures till they where gone, now it's easy to treat all new animals as a prophylaxis in a different room with available sprays and to approach the way Dave described, same way I do it for years now. No matter who you purchase from treat anyway, I have procured mites from some pretty well known people over the years.

Frank,
..You have your history right. We were using Vapona in the form of Shell No Pest Strips a long time ago. I think that they were used in animal places including snake collections soon after they were introduced which must have been sometime in the 60s. The first I remember them in a snake place was probably late 60s or very early 70s. There were a bunch of them hung all over the place. Later on, perhaps late 70s to early 80s it became known that Vapona could be very dangerous and Shell seriously changed the No Pest Strips and they became less effective at killing snake mites but remained in use by people like me into the mid 80s. Linda mentioned Pyrethrins/permethrin and I do believe Permethrin is a derivative form of the Pyrethrins but as far as I know the other pyrethrins can be dangerous in enclosed rooms and containers and Permethrin is infinitely safer to use around people and pets and especially and most importantly in snake cages. There were other things used including California spray and olive and vegetable oil through the 70s and 80s. As soon as Provent-a-mite came out and people started seeing the good results with it and other Permethrin products they have been the gold standard of snake mite treatment. The efficacy of permethrin is at least tenfold better than anything else we used in the past. Bob Pound the Provent-a-mite guy used to come on these forums trying to convince people that his product was better than other Permethrin products because it was slightly different with better Cis/trans ratio or something. He may have been right but he got lots of arguement about it, especially on the Boa forum. We do owe him a great deal for his coming out with his product and showing us the best way to treat mites.

Jeff, I remember when they changed the no pest strip ingredients, I was angry about that, very young at the time, I do however know a few people who killed their snakes, but they did not properly ventilate, but I do also recall not feeling so well myself until I started wearing gloves while using the stuff. I also remember the big tadoo with provent o mite and the "other" product, I still have a case of the "other" stuff, but I swear I would never use it to kill anything but roaches
