Breeding Corn Snakes?

Turtlegirl May 21, 2003 01:19 PM

Hey all

I have a 43 inch male normal phase Corn named Miracle and I would like to get him a mate and breed him in the near future and I have a few questions...

1. Are Corns easy to breed?

2. What size cage would I need 4 an adult pair, and should I house them together all the time or only to breed them?

3. How many eggs will a female Corn lay and how long does it take them to hatch?

4. What tempature should the eggs be incubated at?

5. How big/old should a female be b4 she breeds?

6. About how much $$$ would an adult normal phase breeding-sized Corn cost?

7. Would it be best to breed my male with another normal phase Corn, and if I crossed him with another phase what would the babies look like? (would they be half of each phase?)

lol I'm sorry for all these questions... I've never bred snakes b4 and I wanna make sure I know what I'm getting into b4 I buy a new female

Thanks in advance!

>>1. Are Corns easy to breed?
Yes
>>2. What size cage would I need 4 an adult pair, and should I house them together all the time or only to breed them?
Seperately in 20 longs, or together in AT LEAST double that size
>>3. How many eggs will a female Corn lay and how long does it take them to hatch?
between 5 and 50, but usually 10-20. Takes @ 90 days to hatch.
>>4. What tempature should the eggs be incubated at?
@80-84F
>>5. How big/old should a female be b4 she breeds?
36"
>>6. About how much $$$ would an adult normal phase breeding-sized Corn cost?
$100
>>7. Would it be best to breed my male with another normal phase Corn, and if I crossed him with another phase what would the babies look like? (would they be half of each phase?)
Depends the phase, amd no, they would not be half and half. All would be normals in the first generation(depending on what recessive genes both snakes have "hiding"

One more thing to consider:
the costs of the hatchlings...you'll need to house them and feed them and if you don't sell or find homes for them right away, you could end up with more corns then you'd know what to do with.LOL

lol thanks, you're very right!
If I ended up breeding them (which I probably will after I same up the money to buy me a female) I'd sell the babies (locally and online) except for one or 2 that I'd keep for myself

>>1. Are Corns easy to breed?

Very.

>>2. What size cage would I need 4 an adult pair, and should I house them together all the time or only to breed them?

You should not house them together all the time. For breeding, you can introduce one snake into the other's cage. This year, I took the male and female and put them in a spare tank with no substrate. They were done within 30 minutes and then went back to their own tanks.

>>3. How many eggs will a female Corn lay and how long does it take them to hatch?

Size is variable. Some clutches are less than 10 eggs, others are 20 . This year it was nearly 8 weeks from breeding until my corn laid eggs, and incubation is around 2-2 1/2 months, with cooler temps taking longer.

>>4. What tempature should the eggs be incubated at?

82 is a good temperature. It may take them slightly longer to hatch, but there is less risk of high temps. 84 is the highest I would go.

>>5. How big/old should a female be b4 she breeds?

Females should be at least 3 ft and about 300 grams.

>>6. About how much $$$ would an adult normal phase breeding-sized Corn cost?

A breeding-size female will probably run at least $100, probably more.

>>7. Would it be best to breed my male with another normal phase Corn, and if I crossed him with another phase what would the babies look like? (would they be half of each phase?)

If the male is normal, pretty much anything you breed to him will produce normal-looking snakes het for whatever the mother was. There is always the possibility that the male is het for something, but the only way to tell is by breeding.
