Question for long time breeders

tailswithscales Apr 03, 2007 10:50 PM

When I was in the hospital my snake sitters were given strict orders of what to do with my female ball pythons especially my one gravid female. Well these orders were in no way followed. Due to my health problems I've gotten a really late start in cooling /breeding so forth and so on.

Basically to make a long story short my one gravid female was placed in the "cooling" rack with the other females and a couple boys. I do not know how long she's been in there (guessing a month, maybe less) and is set to lay on 4/5.

Could this cause a problem with her eggs? I have never encountered this and am now concerned I may have ruined the clutch.

So what do you guys think?? Could the clutch be ruined?
Thank you.

I have never encountered this before but I would say to pull her from the cooling rack and slowly worm her back up and pray for the best . Depending on the temp she was at there is a good chance that she will lay viable eggs . just can’t say for shore , You may try to e-mail Tracy or Dave Barker at VPI. We keep all of our females in one rack -- cool the rack --and then the room for so many months then start to warm them up, During that time we have females that ovulate early and are gravid for a number of weeks or longer while still in a cooling cycle and we have never had any issues. How cool were you cooling your racks? As long as she had belly heat to lay on during the day she should be fine. We only do temp drops at night and keep them the same during the day to avoid RI and other ailments. They actually only need a 5 degree drop at night, they dont need to be dropped more then that or during the day. If you watched Africas weather forcast daily during their winter months you would be suprised
Good luck with her and keep us posted.
Does she still look good?

She looks perfectly fine. As a matter of fact she started tucking her head last night so I know she should be laying pretty soon.
75o Is the lowest the cooling room is allowed to get. The room is temperature controlled so that way I can cool the Balls and my large pythons at the same time. I've used this method for the last five years and it's been very successful.

I'll keep a close watch on her and see how she goes.

I think it also has a lot to do with the maturity of the female. Certain females can be power feed to size but still have that "young" look to them, while other girls can be grown slow to 1500 grams over a corse of 3-4 years and still only be 1500 grams but look much more mature then the 1 and half year old at 1500 grams. If you have the Barkers book though it is a very interesting section, they actually have a lot of interesting thoughts and theorys that normally are not discussed often.

She should be fine... she may be a little late on here lay date. Lower tempts can delay development, but as long as mom is healthy... the eggs should be health.

Hope this puts your mind at easy
