heating a wooden cage

caietaro Apr 03, 2007 10:52 PM

I have plans made up to build a 5'x2'x2' cage for Princess, my female BCI, my only issue is I'm wondering how to heat such a cage? I've never used a wooden cage like this before. Can I put heat tape or heat pads on the underside of the cage? Will the wood still allow for sufficient heat exchange? I'd prefer belly heat over hanging lights...any suggestions?
Thanks! =)

Your best bet would be to use radiant heat panels. I don't see under cage heat being an option with wood cages. I used radient heat panels in all of my wood and plastic cages, and flex-watt is used in the racks. I personally prefer the heat panels. It gives your snake heat all over and not just the underside. Thermostats are a must with any heat source of course.

I have never used radient heat panels before, do you know of any good places to get them? Would I mount them inside the cage on the sides, bottom, or top? Any idea what size (or BTU?) I would need for a 5x2x2 cage?
Thanks again!

I use flexwatt under my wooden cages. the heat gets through just fine and I have to use a thermostat. I get a perfect hot spot temp
