Mulberries!

PHRatz Apr 04, 2007 09:35 AM

Last year we had a late freeze & didn't get any berries at all. I was outside yesterday, passed by the red mulberry & WOW it's loaded with green berries right now.
I looked at the white mulberry.. it's a little bit behind the other tree this year but it's loaded too.
If we just do NOT have a late freeze! I've got my fingers crossed.

Yee Haw!

We have a big old mulberry tree at the back edge of out property and I'm actually thinking about building a temperary pen under it for late summer early fall, so then the berries would fall into the pen and the turtles could get fat for winter. Two years ago we didn't have any berries because of a late frost but last year we had tons. Of course late frost for us means early May not April, must be nice for you. Our trees are pretty much still in dormant to swollen buds stage, in fact we have snow flurries today and a cold northwest wind, what a bunch of bull crap, the turtles are inside for the next few days, but next week it could be 70s or 80s and they will go outside again.

Yeah, heavy sigh, my mulberry tree is still sound asleep. Which is a good thing because the weatherman is predicting "plowable" snow on Wednesday! Sheesh!

I KNEW I spoke too soon!
We got freezing temps early yesterday & still have snow on the ground so most likely I just lost my entire crop.
It did rain, I did water the heck out of those trees before the cold front hit.. I've heard rumors that if the trees are not dehydrated when a cold snap hits they should be ok.
I'm not holding out much hope though...
