Chesapeake Bay, VA Easterns

MikeMurphy Apr 04, 2007 01:13 PM

Does anyone have any shots of their CB Va Easterns they can post? I'm getting a pair this year and just wanted to check some out. I know Peter (Jolles) got a pair last year in Daytona. Any pics, Peter? Thanks!

here is the clutch pete picked form. They are from Northampton County on the Virginia eastern shore. Hope to produce another clutch this year.

Tony, Those are not the Chesapeake Easterns he is talking about.

I got actual Chesapeake Easterns (from south of the james river) from Brad McKown and another pair from Ted Thompson. Totally different from the ones I got from you. The Chesapeake Kings (at least the ones I have seen) all have much broader bands while the ones I got from you look like the kings I have seen that are from Charles, Calvert, and St. Marys Counties in Maryland. Look at a map and it is easy to see why...

All of those animals are in the collection of Brad Bauserman now.

that he "scored" on a while back, from the "pile" of eggs he found!. Paul Weaver has a really cool patterned one.

Those are no doubt an isolated "relict" form that became their own intity, similar to the way the "Outer Banks" king became it's own little population.

Which Brad do you mean?

I brought back a clutch of babies from Edisto that someone gave to me while I was on Edsito Island in August 2006. 1/2 the babies went to my friend Brad B. and the other 1/2 went to Brad B. in November when I sliced my Kingsnakes from my collection.

These babies were from a wild-collected gravid female.

My bad, I read "Chesapeake Bay" as the region not the specific city. Not a surprising given I’m a water quality specialist in the area.

I would argue however that these are not more like MD stock animals relative to City of Chesapeake animals. Both locals (City of Chesapeake and Northampton County) exhibit a tremendous amount of diversity and I’ve seen specimens from each that could easily be mistaken as coming from the other.

I think my first visit to the Northampton site may have biased my view. When I flipped a tin and found several easterns most of which were VERY thin banded I assumed that this was representative of the population. That initial assumption did not pan out over the summer. I even found a few wide banded examples that gave the best Chesapeake animal a run for its money.

The pic is of an in-situ male. I would say a third look like this guy, a third have much thinner almost yellowish chains and the other third are typical of the more wide banded animals you find in coastal areas with sandy soils

Tony - yes, I based my statement on just the one picture of the animal you posted on KS. Pretty cool that you found several down there.

I wish you would invite me to come with you one weekend. I would be down there immediately...

Wow. thanks everyone. I think this one is my favorite. Hopefully I can get some that look like this one. Where did you get it?

Yep, Howie has some nice Virginia Beach locality Easterns.

Steve
