Green burm - no control of movement

safaritom Apr 04, 2007 02:16 PM

I took in an abandoned 5-7 month old green burm... was in perfect health .. ate great ... was extremly vicious though and aggressive ...

Had onserved him for about 2 months with no problems the one day he just cant move ... he tries to strike at me but he has no control of his body , he writhes all over the place curling up as though he cant get his motor signals to the right parts of his body ... i put a f/t rat in and he wants to eat it but cannot swallow.. he bites it but gets no further... his body just writhes all around as thoug he is sending the wrong signals to the wrong parts of his body ...

Has anyone seen this ? Any ideas? My vet is stumped and i dont want to euthanize this lil jerk... but i may have to ...

If the quality of life cannot be recovered then euthanasia is your best option. To really pursue this start with a full panel of diagnostics. Bloodwork including glucose, lactate, electrolytes, and and the other standard chemestry. A CBC will hopefully discover if this is infectious. X-rays are a good idea to locate any abnormal tumours, swellings, abscesses, other masses, or skeletal abnormalities which may explain such symptoms.

All while this is going on, I'd recommend fluid therapy and symptomatic treatment. This will benefit if this is of toxic origin. Hopefully a cause is found without too much looking and a decision can then be made to see if treatment is worth it. If nothing is found and you've exhausted all the affordable diagnostics, then stick with fluids and symptomatic treatment for a few days. If no progress, then you have your unfortunate answer.

Good luck with this guy.

Thanks Ian ,

Unfortuneatly I have found out the he has been posioned byu the use of No Pest Strips as a Miticide..
Ive used No Pest in the past with no problems what so ever.. I have a rather large collection and no one else has been harmed. I guess this one in particular snake has a sensitivity to it. Ive read it on a few pages about snakes that have died within 24 hours of exposure to No Pest Strips ... Same symptoms etc..

Thanks Again

did it recover after you removed the strip?

I think he said in another post that it was euthanised due to the extent of the symptoms.
