New with baby BD, some questions

Kerreya76 Apr 04, 2007 03:22 PM

Hi, I am new to the Bearded Dragon world. I have had Iguanas before but not these guys. A student of mine had several baby BD's and gave me two. They are housed in a 55 gallon aquarium that has been partitioned off so they won't loose track of the crickets. I also have UVB lights and all the other fun lights. The tank is 75 in the coolest part and in the basking area 100. My questions are these. The people that gave them to me were feeding them green bean baby food and lettuce. I tried feeding green bean baby food but neither one wanted to eat it. I put out some finely shredded collard greens and they didn't want it. Yesterday when I brought them home for the first time one of them ate three crickets but the other one just let them sit on his head. I'm worried they aren't getting enough to eat. What can I do?? I am giving them water and spraying their salad. Is it normal for them to sleep alot as well? These guys are only 12 days old. They had to leave and give the babies away. I have researched and researched but what more can I do to ensure that they live and eat? Thanks in advance. I'm used to iguanas an even then I didn't have them that young.

from what I'e read babies that old are quite delicate, you need to give them at least daily baths in luke warm water to keep them hidrated and be very very careful about the size of crickets you feed, I don't know where you've gotten yours or what size they are but the idea is that the crickets should be no longer then the distance between your beardies eyes, probably smaller then those you can buy at petstores.
Try different kinds of baby food or wettened baby dragon pellets and get a dropper and drip it on the end of their nose, it may take a while for them to eat this way.
Mine is several months old and only eats fresh fresh greens, fruits or pellets when it is either stuck to an insect or moved by an insect. If you can get small silkworms they are really useful for getting small beardies to eat greens in addition to being a great regular insect to feed.
I aslo recommend roaches as they are easy to keep and breed, and the baby roaches are pretty small.

I thought I should add that babies shouldn't be fed mealworms because they will cause an impaction, you've probably read this before. There is a post in this forum about a baby not eating (at a petstore) and the guy was feeding it juvinile pellets soaked and mashed and droped on the babies nose a bit at a time. Pellets would be more complete then just baby food if they arn't eating crickets.
