Took a trip out west of Phoenix and did some serious hiking/climbing.

We sort of did a little hike into the Harquahalas, and came upon a mine shaft. Unfortunately, it only yielded one lonely Red-spotted Toad:

Nothing was moving there except the Utas, so we decided to leave the Harq's and check out some cliffs accross the way instead.

This is a view looking back at the Harq's after we did some climbing:

On the way up, we found this Blacktail Rattlesnake:

Near the top, we found this feisty little Speckled Rattlesnake:

And on the way down, this little Banded Gecko was flipped. Looks like something took a bite out of it recently:

That's all I got for this time. Hopefully things start moving soon!

Very nice!

Those 2 shots of the lepidus are great!

I'm heading out to Phoenix for Memorial Day weekend (annual hockey tourney), and HOPE to get out at least 1 night to do some herping if I have any energy!

Anybody going to be around/up for some night outings?

Thanks Todd.

I if you mean the Speck, it's a mitchelli.

Dude, there's always someone willing to go out. Shoot me an email and we'll figure something out for you.

I have herped that little mountain/ridge across from the harqs several times. It is a neat place, but those black rocks get BLAZING hot in the summer.

I was photographing a chuckwalla there one day and crouched right on top of a coiled blacktail. I would have taken a very bad bite (you know the old joke about having to find someone to suck the venom out). Fortunately, blacktails are usually kittens.

We have found 5 species of rattlesnake on that road in about 30 minutes one summer night.

Ouch! That would have sucked (pun intended)!

I absolutely love that road. It's my favorite place right now.

We were at the top of the bluffs overlooking the road and we also was a pair of Red-tailed Hawks doing a courtship dance in the air. It was unbelievable. Unfortunately, I was too slow on the draw with the camera...

Great pics. I'm looking forward to herping AZ a couple of times this year. I love Blacktails. They're one of the most beautiful Crotalids.
