Mating Turtles

Dishy May 21, 2003 01:21 PM

My sister-in-law has 2 turtles she keeps together, a female RES and a male painted turtle. She called me last night to say that she "caught" them "mating" and wanted to know if any baby turtles could result from this. I don't know the answer to this question and really can't seem to find anything browsing the internet.

If someone can give me an answer to this, I'd be most grateful.

It can successfully happen with two different species, but the problem is that the offspring they produce have a really high mortality rate since there hybrids/halfbreeds. Plus if she doesn't have any where to lay them they won't last either.

I'm sure the reason she wants to know is so that she will be able to provide the proper accomodations for egg laying, should they be necessary. These turtles are pets and I'm sure there is no interest in actually "breeding" more turtles.

Thanks for the info

If she did have eggs laid, that would be miracle #1, then to have them hatch would be an astronomically amazing miracle (she should buy lottery tickets that day if it happened).

She really has no practical reason to worry or change her arrangements to accommodate egg laying.
