Why Not?

brak Aug 13, 2003 10:54 AM

I wonder why my little leopard geckos will not eat mealworms and if there is anything I can do to make them want mealworms (like sticking the worms in the cricket house so they pick up the cricket scent, but what if the crickets pick up the worm scent and they refuse to eat either, ahh!)?

I also wonder why they never use the cool little half log hide I made for them. It is on the cooler end of the tank and I put damp moss inside as a substrate and keep it damp, etc. but they either hang out in the open or under the big somewhat open log-like decoration on the warm side. Anyone know why they wouldn't use a nice humid cozy hide?

My don't care for mealies much cause they don't move but if yours are eatting than thats what counts right? Also tthe humid hide needs to be over the heat mat, cold and wet is bad.

I think it depends on how you offer it to them. I had to start feeding one of my girls by hand, which was pretty gross at first, but it got her to start eating them.

The humid hide is supposed to be on the warm side. Otherwise, it's just cold and wet (and not humid).

Yeah, I am very happy that they are eating so well where the crickets are concerned nd I did try to hand feed a mealie to them, but even though it squirmed in my fingers, they just weren't interested. hmph.

That makes perfect sense about the humid hide, I will move it, but I did read somewhere that it should be on the cool side. So I begin to doubt other things I have read. What about the water dish, should that be on the warm or cool side? Currently I have it on the cool side.

here how i get my hatchlings started on mealies. pinch or cut a end off the mealie then touch the Leos lips with that end, this should cause it to lick its lips. you prob see it get that excited look and then snatch it. then drop a another infront of it and see if it will get it. sometimes i have to this a couple times before they start getting them on their own. its worked everytime so far for me. they all now will get them out of a dish but they still love their crickets.

I have my water dishes on the cool side. That way it doesn't evaporate so fast and raise the humidity level of the whole cage.
