Just an ordinary wild Black Rat Snake

SkyChimp Apr 04, 2007 08:27 PM

I caught this big fellow today. He's an old snake, with lots of scars. He appears to have failed to shed an eye-cap. The eye-cap was clouded and had a yellow haze on it. His eye-ball and pupil underneath still looked good. I treated it with some bacitracin and released him in a damp area of a local historical park far away from highways, but near woods, a lake, and hay fields. He should do well.

That first pic is priceless.

What's he doing in your boat?

SkyChimp Apr 04, 2007 09:36 PM

The boat happened to be uncovered and it was convenient.

That is not an ordinary snake, that is an exceptional snake. LOL Great photos. What part of the country is he from?

My female, who is in need of a mate at this time, is from York Co. Va. She is a rescue snake from 2005. She laid 12 eggs in 2006, but I no longer have the male that I breed her to. I do have a young male from NY, but he seems to have the sex drive of a dead rat. (DARN!!) So if someone wants to lend me a male who knows what his parts are for, I am all ears.

Where did yo get that sweet looking blk rat ....Can we get a better pic ?
Thanks

She is a rescue snake from York Co. Va. I have had her for almost 2 years. At this point, I am still looking for a mate for her. I think she is a great example of an Eastern Black Rat Snake, Pantherophis obsoletus obsoletus (Pantherophis alleghaniensis). (Personally I am more inclined to us the P. o. obsoletus after reading H. LISLE GIBBS et al paper "Hybridization between mtDNA-defined phylogeographic lineages of black ratsnakes (Pantherophis sp.)"

It does my heart good to know there are still people in this hobby who like wild types, and not just odd color morphs.
