New Iowa Law?

Iowapitviper Apr 04, 2007 11:23 PM

Help I just heard this evening on the news that Iowa was about to pass a ban on "exotic" animals. Does anyone have any idea how to get a list of what Iowa considers exotic?

Hello, You might look into the Iowa Herp Society forums. There was a bit of talk on there about it. Unfortunately, the IHS is taking a hands off approach to all of this. NOT SURE WHY??? Maybe they want to lose all of their animals or are in hopes that they will get the granfather clause. But, even at that they will lose the legal ability to breed ANYTHING!! From what I hear thus far, lions tigers bears etc. Then they tagged in constrictors >10ft and all venemous. Could be all constrictors. Not certain. God Bless, Lee Van Hyfte <

[url=http://coolice.legis.state.ia.us/Cool-ICE/default.asp?Category=billinfo&Service=Billbook&menu=false&hbill=HF888 It has cleared the Senate! and is currently in the house. How it effects us NO venemous except AZA and various other permits. $50/animal and $25/animal/yr No Gilas No Croc monitors or water monitors. No retics, african rocks, or anacondas The Law does allow for grandfather clause. HOWEVER the fees are extremely substantial. in the large constrictors $100/animal then $50/year/animal Plus microchipping. To top that in the event you want to sell your Grandfathered animal it is not possible to do so. ONLY donateable to a conservation institution OR destruction of the animal. God Bless, Lee Van Hyfte

Doesn't the list sound almost EXACTLY like laws attempted to be passed in other states? Doesn't it look like perhaps the same national organization(s) are behind these attempts?

These are "gateway" laws. Mainstream folks (herp societies etc) don't view them as threatening because they're not directly affected, for the most part. However, once the initial law is passed, it's easy to add amendments later, changing the list of "allowed" species. Once the initial law passes, it's VERY difficult to get it relaxed/repealed.
