introducing 2 new tortoises

turtlegirlgo Apr 05, 2007 12:01 AM

i have a male russian tortoise who has been alone for the last 6 years, and i have acquired 2 new russians (one male and one female) and i would like to introduce them to one another. my male has just come out of hibernation, and so i don't know if i should wait to introduce them, what steps to go through, etc. when i tried to put them together, my male attacked/mounted them, but i am not ready to give up on trying to put them together. does anyone know what i can do? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Two male Russians can't be kept together without LOTS of fighting.
Plan on building another pen for the 2 new ones you got.

And also think of the poor female! Russians are known for aggressive behavior, and at the least you want a ratio of two females to one male (and lots of little hiding places), so that one of the females can have a break from the harrassment.

That's not quite true. I've kept many Russian males together without a problem and still do.

The keys are personality, space and furnishings.
