How to keep UTH from cracking glass?

RoswellBoa Apr 05, 2007 12:35 AM

Besides the obvious of having a spill proof water bowl and not overfilling...

I had a few tanks develop cracks without water spillage, and one time under a chunk of urates...must have been the fluid.

Is there any safe material I can place between the glass and the uth that might keep cracking to a minimum?

I have thermostats now but did not in the past...was this the problem, they just got too hot?

Yes, they got too hot. Temperature controllers are a must, but there is another way - increase the thermal mass such that the glass transfers heat to something else. Ceramic tile above the heater can help, so can a layer of gravel or sand on the tank bottom.
