Bloated Ball Python "Apollo"

ravenfrady Apr 05, 2007 01:41 AM

I got my ball python just after he hatched from a pet store. He was my first Herp. 7 months ago he was in a horrible accident, where about 60% of his body was burned down to his flesh, and there was a hole in his body where you could actualy see his heart. It was touch and go for a few days but my vet was awsome and he has almost completely recovered. He did get mouth rott in the past month due to the compromise of his immune system but it has cleared up with the antibiotics the vet administred. Because he is regenerating scales he is in a perpetual state of shedding so i try to maintain the humidity in the 70-80% range. it fluctuates because i live in the desert and it is difficult to maintain this high humidity and proper air flow. The temp stays around 95 (day) 85(night) on the hot side and 75-70 on the cool side.
Anyway that is the background info, Tonight when i went to replenish his water i noticed that he is really bloated. He has never been constipated before so it may be that and i'm not recognising it for what it is. His skoots feel almost like a water ballon and he is sensitive to touch from his abdoman to just before his vent. he ate yesterday (2 med rats) with no problems at all. I soaked him in warm water for about 8 min about an hour ago but it didn't really achieve anything so far. I'm mostly concerned because i read a forum post from a woman with a very young red tail that had simmilar symptoms, it died.

Thank you for any and all help. My Email
here is a non-bloated picture of Apollo

wow, has this snake been through a whole ordeal eh.

I would be quite concerned with this guy and take him back to your vet asap. Don't wait for an appointment, they'll fit you in tomorrow as this is likely serious. If this is a rapid onset of a bloated abdomon I'm concerned about a rupture, either the gastrointestinal tract (he just ate) or a bleeding tumour or mass or other. Other problems can cause enlarged "bloated" body, but they take longer, although still usually just as serious.

Good luck, it sounds like you've used a lot with this guy already!

When i checked on him yesterday he had deficated and the bloating was gone. do you still think i should go to the vet? Also, i got rid of the hot rock due to the information on this forum, i'm still using an undertank heating pad and an over head lamp, but his tank is very large and these two togther aren't producing enough heat...any suggestions?

Good to hear that the bloating has dissipated.

Well, you could go to a higher wattage bulb, get a smaller tank, block-off some of the ventillation holes/screen lid (that allow heat to escape). You will have to monitor temps as you do some/all of these to achieve the correct temp gradient.

If the snake "bloats" again you should definitely goto the vet. The snake should probably have a vet check-up as preventative maintenance & to check for possible causes prophylatically.
