wish there were micropholis like this !

DMong Apr 05, 2007 12:35 PM

Too bad there aren't any "micropholis" like this one that Glenn Slemmer photographed from Equador!!, I'd buy one in a heartbeat!.

To me, these are much more distict, and represent the separate subspecies of "micropholis" better than the Colombian form.

Even though they prefer different elevations than "andesiana", the Colombian form in US. collections show more "andean" traits than does the one pictured, as well as others I've seen, for example,...the very wide banding, coloration, and separate black "cap" on the head.

Sure, the ones that have recently been available in small numbers to the U.S. are great looking animals, but I'm sure everyone(including me) would LOVE to get their hands on some that looked like the one Glenn photographed!!LOL

I'm sure it's no doubt because of import legalities, along with other "red-tape" as well.
in any case, those things are totally "AWESOME" in my opinion!

i remember that animal.....it was brought in by western zoological in about '75.....the photo was taken by bob carlson at the foxchase cancer center....not by slemmer...slemmer owned the animal...he also first marketed the albino red rat ....i used to buy mice from him....notice that fine potting soil environment......

...have that photo. I believe in "Living Snakes of The World"
I posted a copy of it some time ago asking who was working with those animals.(L.t.micropholis)
Of course Nathan W. responded
Like you, I have not seen animals that look exactly like the one in the pic.....yet.

That's interesting!,.....I remember reading about his first amel. Cornsnake purchase from Europe in 1971(I think). And he described how excited he was to see one for the first time.

As I understand it,H. B. Bechtel first produced an amel. back in 1961 that was the first one known to exist.

slemmer got his first amel....eh,albino red from hank molt ,who "rescued" it from the baltimore zoo(frank groves' line...john groves was curator of the philly reptile house at that time)........hank and bob udell were instrumental in helping slemmer pump-up his collection for "scientific" purposes.......e.g. cancer treatment, etc......he kept his collection in his office and another store room in the foxchase building...and kept them fat on surplus mice from the colony there.....he didn't lower temps then, the reds bred as a result of natual light cycle only.....he was fairly successful in his production of red rat snakes.....then he moved to the northwest....and so the rumors abound.....i haven't heard from him or about him in years.....i'm gonna google his name now.....yo mark that lizard is doing great....thanks
