new cham

alejandro2004 Apr 05, 2007 02:25 PM

Hi i just got a new male veiled chameleon. For it size y assume it is aprox 4 month old. I have his cage outside in my backyard it is very strong so predators dosnt worry me. but could it be okay if it gets the all rain? or should i cover the top of the cage or atleast half of it. also since it arrived it have been like trying to get out of the cage in the bottom or in the top of the cage. it has allot of plants in there. 2 large ficus, one palm tree and a phottos. will this behavior stop when he get used to the cage?

My cham dos this as well, not all the time but fairly regularly he appears to be checking for holes to escape from. In a previous post someone stated it maybe because something is wrong with his set up but i don't know how much better then outside you could do, depending on where you live of course. Where do you live?

i live in puerto rico, so is warm all year, i just noticed that he harmed him self in the head while doing this. he now have black marks on moth side of the head.

hey
alot of chams get black marks, its basically a bruise,it will go away unless it is very serious..but in your case it doesn't sound too good..something must be wrong with your setup if he is soo desperatly tring to get out of his cage..did you make sure to clean the plants and make sure they are no pesticides on them because if there is,he'll get sick..if he continues to keep rubbing his nose on the cage,a serious problem could occur..how long has he been doing this??what are the temps out there??humidity??can you get some pics of his setup??the pic you posted before didn't show up..too much rain could be bad i would think, since he is in a cage and not in a tree in the wild..you need to try to make sure to keep the cage dry after it rains..because if you leave all the water in there,he might get a upper respitory infection from all the wettness in his cage..

this is the cage. it is diferent now because it dosnt have the metal thing in the top. the plants are bigger and I added a big ficus tree covering the top. it have 2 feeding dishes one in the back and one in the side using a water gallon. he havnt eated anything from the dishes but if i put a cricket in a branch he will eat it. the cage is very big for the cham but tomorow i will go and make a smaller cage using a smaller screen. this cage is this big because it was made for an oustaleti. that was what supposed to be an oustaleti.. big story. will try to get a picture of the new cham.
