Chams & Cats, or sick?

grimsin Apr 05, 2007 04:20 PM

Okay so strange thing happened last night i opened my front door and this cat ran in. Were letting it stay until the owners are found... if there not found it could be a permanent resident. I noticed a lot of you have cats on your list of critters. Do your chams act funny if they can see them? The cat wants to be near me always and since im always in front of the comp thats were the cat is and my chams cage sits behind me. He hasn't had any adverse reactions like this to people so i don't know thats the problem. Hes moving REALLY slow and hes not his active self. Doing a lot of resting on things. He gets vitamin dusted crickets 3 times a week. Also gets silkies, meal worms and the ocasional wax worm. Temps are droped at night and high 70's during the day.

Basically the husbandry has been good im sure many of you read my concern with the gaping that never stopped (until today) and vet said he was just regulating temps. One out of the ordinary thing did happen and that was that a white vary fuzzy, almost like spider web type mold grew in the cage last night over night it was rather amazing. I cleaned it out immediately this morn. I think theres nats coming from his plant to but i cant see them in the soil i just every now and then catch one flying around his cage or our room!

His color is good although an hour ago i cought him vary dark almost black, he changed back to his normal color though almost as soon as i came in and noticed him like that.

Hes not moving around hardly at all. Even when i poke at him normally he attempts to run away. I gave him a warm shower and for a little while after that he was active but then slowed back down again.

A few changes this week, i changed from a milk jug with a hole to an actual dripper. And not a change but odd occurrence the batch of crickets for this week all died in two days as to where the last batch of 100 i was able to keep alive for as long as it took him to eat them. Was like 4 weeks they lived since we got the crickets before we got Fred. He will be going to the vet ASAP but if anyone has any ideas. He shows no signs of respiratory infection which is what i would have first guessed with that weird mold deal. No funky mucus or stuff coming out his nose holes. No weird labored breathing. Hes just not active, we will see here shortly if hes eating still.

Well he just ate 3 silkies, so hes eating still and the cat moved out of his view and he seems to be moving around now normally. Hmmm is it the cat???? Anyone else experience this? Either way im taking a stole sample to the vet Saturday or Monday but... could he really be that freaked out by the cat? All the cats done since its come into our house is sleep... When hes acting all weird thats all its done then to is lay there asleep.

hey
i think it is the cat..mine cham. has seen my lil yorkshire terrier..i try to keep her out of my room and not let my lil guy see her..when your cham sees the cat it most likely thinks something is going to happen to him since a cat would be considered a predator in the chams mind, especially if your cham is still young and not a adult..if he is looking at the cat and turning dark(if not basking) then i bet it is the cat..mine has gotten dark once when he saw a our yorkshire terrier,he just stared at her till i moved her out of the room..she loves my room and being with me soo she cries sometimes to get in,but its best she doesn't..also,you don't want to be able to let the cat in there alone,it might jump up and try to get in the cage(i've heard of this happening)..even more so since you don't know this cat execpt for a day or a few since you found it..its just added stress on your cham..

Yea i defiantly think its the cat. My cham seems fine except when he can see the cat. Fixed that problem LOL! Cham > Cat

Anyone got any suggestions for how to get rid of the nats?

Keep the surface of the soil dry. Gnats can't live and breed in dry soil.

Yea, i was thinking on taking the plant out for a bit and letting the soil dry up. Right now it catches one of the drip outlets though. Once i have a bigger cage i have more plants to put in and it shouldn't be a problem. That and there will be more airflow in general in the new cage.

If you use a large pothos in a large pot, it'll soak up the moisture pretty quickly and help keep the surface dry. Keeping the top layer clean of leaves and debris will help it stay dry, as will more airflow (which will probably lower cage humidity at the same time).
