rat breeding

I recently had my first litter , but i had two in the same cage and the one stole the others babies. I left them for a couple days to see what would happen but the one with babies would not leave the other one alone. I think they spent more time fighting than taking care of the babies. I finally took her out tonight and put her back in with the male. How soon could she get pregnant again? Also any suggestions on how to avoid this problem again.

I always put pregnant female rats in a small nursery cage a few days before they give birth. I let them give birth in the nursery cage and raise them until at least 3 weeks before putting them all back in the main big cage with the other females.

Now with mice and african soft furred rats I usually just leave them all together and let the females work it out. They both tend to do communal litter piles rather than stealing pups from other females.

As was mentioned, you can separate them. I personally let them work it out. After a few days they get tired of fighting and settle down.
They can get pregnant again within hours of giving birth. Another reason I leave mine all in a group.

Thanks, I had originally planned on leaving them all together, but i got a new female and took the male out to put in with her. I will just leave them all together next time.

Thanks
