Pink Belly

zoeytheblood Apr 05, 2007 07:37 PM

I have a blood python who has started to show a little pink coloration throughout her abdomen. I keep the temperature at about 75 on cool side, and a basking spot of 90-95. Her humidity is usually around 75-80% I don't think that is too humid, she always burrows into the sphagnum moss I provide. I am a little concerned, any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey,
Bloods and short-tails, excrete copious amounts of urine in liquid form and not the usual urates which is also common place. If you are keeping sphagnum or other substrate that the blood can lie in and bury him/her self under, then it is very possible that there is urine soaked substrate that you are not aware of and it is causing the red belly to form. Very common with these guys and something to check for. Always smell and observe any foul smells in the form of ammonia. M2C!

I am no Vet, and without seeing the snake and the cage this could all be wrong, but I think those are the signs of the begginging stages of scale rot. Make sure it is humid but not wet. I would soak the snake in a betadine solution every other day for a week and see if it improves.

Is she due for a shed? Snakes bellies often turn pink before going into shed. Mine usually show a pink tinge 3-5 days before going opaque. If you've been keeping the enclosure clean, I wouldn'e panic.
I wouldn't stress the animal out with any treatments unless your sure what you're treating. A wise keeper once warned me against "killing them with kindness".I'd double check my temps and humidity, keep a watchful eye on it, but leave her alone.

You might want to up your temps a bit 75 on the cool side seems a bit chilly (IMO)

Thank you everyone. Her skin is starting to look pretty dull, so I am pretty sure she is going into a shed, she is pretty grumpy too =). I have never noticed her having a pink belly before for a shed, I usually see her blue eyes. But anyway, thanks for the aid it is always nice being confirmed by other people who know snakes, especially bloods. Thank you.
