lighting/heat

tonus Aug 13, 2003 12:10 PM

i have done a lot of research before i get my dragon, but i am still a little bit confused about the temp in the basking area. should the 115-120 be on the rock, or above it? if above, how high?

i also have a question about uv coil bulbs, are they just as good as others, and can i use it in a regular fixture like the one for the heat?

thanks,
tony

the basking spot should be between 105-115 right where the dragon sits, i usually put the probe right above, like half inch, off the surface they will be sitting on, it gives more an idea of what temp they will be sitting under. as for the UV coil bulb im really not certian,i have never used one and dont know anything about them really. i hope someone else can help you out with that...

They don't put out near as much heat as a basking bulb does and I hear they still have to be pretty close to the dragon for it to be effective.

Sure about what? That they don't put out much heat? or that they still have to be pretty close to the dragon for it to be an effective source of UVB?

I would say yep to both! lol

20 watts shouldnt be too much heat is what i meant

BeginnersBasics Aug 13, 2003 02:35 PM

No way that a 20 watt bulb could be too much heat unless it was laying on top of the beardie itself... The lowest wattage bulb of any kind used in my house is on my baby tanks and they are 60 watt..sometimes 75 and those are the lowest!

im not trying to sound like an ass, but are you agreeing with me?

BeginnersBasics Aug 13, 2003 02:41 PM

I am saying that a 20 watt bulb could in no way be "too hot" like you asked.
The only problem is.... no way it could be hot enough to be both a basking light and a uvb source.

The UV coil bulb is just a compact flourescent that you can screw into a regular socket. It practically gives off no heat. But since it's so small, I doubt it'd be helpful unless it's next to the basking site. Why not just get a mercury vapor to double as both?
