Removing stuck shed, help please

AZHAEL Apr 06, 2007 08:23 AM

Hi, my mate´s gecko sheded yesterday but there are small portions of stuck skin in four of it´s fingers. We tried taking them out with a tweezers, and putting her for 10 minutes in mild water, but they don´t fall. What else can we try?? We heard stuc skin in the fingers can e very dangerous and develop into infections or lack of blood irrigation...so please help us find a solution for this.
thank you.

That is for shed that has been stuck on several times and doesn't come off. A little bit of shed is no problem as long as you get it off eventually. Does he have a humid hide for it? Try soaking again. You could try shed ease.

even if the gecko has shed stuck for a few days it can cause problems to the fingers and possible loss of them. try soaking in warm water some more and just trying to get it off. if that doesnt work look for this stuff called "Shed Aid" by Zoo Med. it will take it off no problem. i really recomend it if you have sedding problems and all you have to do is spray it on and let it sit for like 30 seconds to a minute and then rub or pull off the skin. there are other sheding sprays that i am sure work also.

This happens to mine quite often. I simply carry them over to the sink and using a wet Q-tip (warm water) wet the skin and roll it off their toes. You can roll underneath their "feet" to get the skin off.

When they are about to shed, I spray water in their cage to raise the humidity, and this helps with the shed.

Good luck.

My stay true method-
Put a drop of mineral oil on each affected toe. Place a wet paper towel in a tupperware and zap it in the microwave for like 10 sec just til its warm. Put the gecko in the steamy tupperware and close the lid. (remember air holes!) Let steam/soak for ten minutes. Take out the lizard and pull the skin off with fingernails or tweezers. Repeat if necc.

I have one leo that does this all the time (actually bent her claw straight as a result of very stubborn stuck shed, but it eventually came off with no lasting damage). I spray her feet with dechlorinated water, wait about 30 seconds, then gently use my nails to slowly scrape/pull it off. With stubborn shed, it helps to create a tear in it to loosen it up. This method takes a long time (especially with geckos as nervous as this girl) but it works and doesn't need any product.
