Everglades Acutus

Matt Harris Apr 06, 2007 12:04 PM

Saw 7 adults while canoeing a few weeks ago. Also saw a couple in the Turkey Point canals while looking for nesting activity, but didn't have the camera with me.

Nice shots Matt.
Did you rent the canoe at Flamingo bay and head up the canal?
Were most of them by the rental area or farther up the canal?
Thanks,
Eric Erb

Most were between the marina and the overpass. We saw others however, up at Paurotis Pond and 9 Mile pond, but didn't get any pics as they were far off.

How wide spread are the Acutus in Florida? I thought that they were pretty rare and only in a few areas way to the south. Am I wrong? One of my coworkers was insisting that his sister in Ft. Myers has one show up in her yard on a regular basis. I said that was probably an alligator but he insisted that it's a crocodile. I guess now that I look at a map Ft. Myers is just above the everglades. Is it possible she has a crocodile showing up in her yard? How likely is it?

Could very well be. They range all the way up to Sanibel Island(lone female lives there and lays infertile eggs). I'm not sure how regularly they up there beyond the one seen regularly on Sanibel. Ft. Myers isn't that far from Whitewater Bay, so I'd say she likely is seeing a croc.
