Blood Red

jshipma Apr 06, 2007 09:46 PM

Is Bloodred really a simple recessive gene or is it something else? A lot of my "het" bloodred offspring seem to have the dark coloration of the parent... Bloods are something I'm just begining to work with so any help would be greatly appreciated!

"Bloodred" has a lot of debate about it. The red part of it is selectively bred. The genetic part to it is called diffused. Some people use the term bloodred to refer to the diffused gene. this causes confussion since you can have the diffused gene in snakes that are not red in color (ex: pewter)
A lot of the time, a Het from a bloodred to non bloodred pairing, will have a unique look about them.
I try to stay out of the bloodred debate, but I hope this helps

Diffused or bloodred is treated as a recessive trait for most purposes. This is sometimes confused with the original Term for bloodred which refered to a selectively bred animal.Misty is right, hets for this trait can vary widely, some looking normal to some appearing with almost a fully diffused pattern.
