Salt and chemicals in turtle tanks

AshRile Apr 07, 2007 09:05 AM

210 gallon, 2 spot lamps for basking, 2 6' uv sets, 2 fluval plus 4, 2 corner air bubbler filters. This time of year i keep it a little heavier stocked. I was told to add aquarium salt and a water conditioner to the water. Daily water changes are done. Does anyone else add salts and chemicals to thier turtle tanks if so what do you add and what are the benefits?
Red ear sliders
Yellow belly cooters
painted tutles
all Avg 4"

I would avoid chemicals period. I am not sure why you
are adding salt as they are fresh water turtles.

I have sliders and painteds and have never used any type
of salt or chemicals.

I never have used them either, but someone told me i should be adding fresh water Aquaruim salt as general tonic to help prevent fungus and bacteria infenctions.I have never heard this before and was wondering if anyone else is using Tap water conditioners and salt.

My tank is open on top so I use tap water knowing the chlorine will evaporate out of it. With sliders I don't know why you would use salt or any other chemicals unless you have a medical problem to begin with. And water changes so often? How can you keep a good bacterial balance and therefore clear water when you do that. I think you're making more work for yourself doing that. If the turtles can get completely out of the water to bask and dry out, they should be ok naturally.
