I just read Michigan Turtles and Lizards by James H. Harding and J. Alan Holman. Turns I was not to take T. Herman, the eastern box turtle, captive - they are listed as species of special concern, and are protected by DNR regulations.

Have been doing some other reading, too, thinking seriously of doing M.S. and/or Ph.D. work on turtles.

Oh, one time someone had us post all pets we have, and said I had an eastern painted (Chrysemys pica picta) (along with a 3-toed box and red-eared slider). Turns out from what I have read, that I actually have a midland painted (C. p. marginata).

Yup, that's correct! I got a permit for my EB because he had a history of captivity. We are also not allowed to be in possession of EB eggs. However, the DNR guy told me that we CAN buy an EB in another state where it is legal, and bring it back to Michigan and keep it w/o a permit. He did suggest keeping some documentation to show where the turtle was purchased.
