Is it in the rain?
I use acrylic latex on those cages that are painted wood. But they are inside, so the only water they see is from my drippers.

yes it will be outside all year so it will get the rain. searching in otheres forums i decided to use the varnish cuz it protects better. I still havnt decided what mesh to use. dont know if the normal metal screen will be strong enought or should i use anther with bigger holes like 1/4 holes but it is a hard metal. I dont think that in puerto rico i can get the plastic coated screen.

i recommend tring to find a plastic screen..with the hard metal screens,it will create alot of wear and tear on his nails if he crawls on the screen and posssibly lose some nails..if i would of kept my cham in his mesh wire cage any longer,i think he might of lost a nail(it was pretty small gauged mesh)..but now i have him in his new cage that is plastic(with wider gauged mesh) and all his nails are only getting longer and not taking any effect on them, but he more adventurous and likes to climb on the screen..he wants to explore the whole thing, not just the branches..hahaha..but if yours doesn't use the screen too much,it might not be a big deal..if you've got some money to spend, check out www.cagesbydesign.com....they can customize the whole cage for you..height,width,lenght,even the insides of the cage..hope this helped.

Uncoated metal can damage their feet and tails, as well as nails. It will also rust.

Actually, I think the latex paint (get a good exterior housepaint) will last longer than the varnish. Either way, you'll have to repaint it after a couple of years.
