Leucistic hogs first pinky..........

SNAKE26 Apr 08, 2007 11:13 AM

Well actually he's eaten several pinkies if I first put them in his mouth (not force feeding). Of course he takes frogs and toads with no problem. Last night I put a pinky in his cage, left for a little while, and he ate it. No scenting, no bait and switch, just plain ol' mouse pinky.

That snake is a gem!!! Once you get easterns on pinkies and rat pinks they freakin grow like weeds, just avoid mice or rats with hair. Try sticking the dead pinky in the frog's mouth and get it slobbery with toad saliva and he should take it. Thats what I did with a tiny 06 eastern I got this year and within 6 months he was eating 3-4 f/t rat pinks at one sitting and was 22 inches long when I sold him. Where did you catch that guy? Kevin

I'm not sure exactly where he was caught. I think somewhere in northern Louisiana. There are conflicting stories. The guy who found it brought it into my friends pet shop and was like "I found this snake, take it" and I ended up with it. Not sure if you read my post correctly but he did take a pinky without scenting or any other tricks. I thought maybe that's why you said something about putting the pinky in the frogs mouth.

Sorry about that, its been a long weekend! I'm so used to reading about people's hogs not taking a pinky that I spaced on that one. Great job!!! I bet hes going to be a stunner when hes an adult! Kevin

just wondering why you said to avoid mice and rats with hair. does that have an effect on a hognose?

kfisher29 Apr 09, 2007 10:36 AM

There has been talk over the years about how easterns and southerns might not digest mouse hair and rat hair good, leading to an early death. I wouldn't even take a chance myself, who knows? I use hairless mice and rat pinks. Kevin

Westerns seem to do just fine. Kevin
